SIBU: The public are encouraged to make full use of Sibu Water Board’s (SWB) Short-Messaging Service (SMS) by registering their mobile phone numbers.
In making the call, SWB general manager Daniel Wong Park Ing said so far, 21,328 out of 60,000 active customers have registered.

“For those who wish to know about interruptions of supply not necessarily affecting themselves, they can also join as Facebook friends. These are all shown on our website,” he said in his address during SWB’s annual dinner cum Chinese New Year celebration held at Kingwood hotel here on Friday.

Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan was the guest-of-honour.  Wong said SWB’s website had gone through several improvements.

“Maintaining such a website is a mammoth effort, and we are fortunate to have an IT officer…who managed to help us attain a 5-star rating,” he said.

Over the years, SWB has been trying to realise its vision of being a world class organisation, he said adding last year it was honoured when the ministry entrusted SWB to host the second Sarawak Water Supply Retreat. He said SWB was even more honoured when the state government decided to appoint it as the implementing agency for the Tanjung Manis Water Supply project.

He added last year, the major pump industry players decided to start an annual event called the ‘Pump Appreciation Day’.

The main objective, he said, was to educate and create awareness among the world’s industries, designers, engineers and professionals to appreciate and recognise the vital role of pumps as the heart of the industry.

Thus, he added the ‘Heart of Industry’ awards were given to shortlisted plants worldwide to recognise their efforts in modernisation, application of latest technology for optimisation of plant performance, reducing energy usage, and minimising down time through constant reviews and upgrading of systems and maintenance programmes.

He revealed that SWB was one of the 44 recipients of the inaugural award worldwide last year. SWB was also recognised for the extensive use of ‘Pump Smart’, he said, adding that since the first Pump Smart installed at Salim Treatment Plant in 2005, the enjoyment of the benefits of energy and operational efficiency have been derived with savings in millions of ringgit.

On the Chief Minister’s Environmental Award (CMEA), SWB won the award among 10 other recipients.

He also disclosed SWB’s customer service and payment counters were acknowledged as the second best in the state after Employees’ Provident Fund last year.
